The Art of Listening Before Responding
Often we listen with the sole intent to reply, rather than listening with the intent to understand. We prepare our defense argument while the other person is still speaking, losing the opportunity to connect genuinely.
The Generosity of Mindful Attention
Offering our sincere attention to another person is one of the greatest gifts of generosity we can give. Listening with the heart means silencing our prejudices and putting ourselves in the other's place, recognizing their pain, joy, or fears without rushing to judge them.
"Nature gave us two ears and only one mouth so that we listen twice as much as we speak."
— Zeno of Citium (quoted by Delia Iaboni)
Improving Affective Communication
The next time you converse with a loved one, pause for two seconds before responding to their words. You will notice how the tone of the conversation and the depth of the connection changes.
