An Open Letter to Time: A Message of Reconciliation with the Years

An intimate and poetic letter addressed to time, thanking for the wrinkles, lessons, and maturity the years gift us.
An Open Letter to Time: A Message of Reconciliation with the Years

Dear and Tireless Time:

Today I pick up my pen to write you this letter, not from bitter nostalgia or reproach, but from a profound and serene reconciliation. For a large part of my life, I saw you as a silent adversary, an relentless thief robbing me of youth, rush, people I loved, and the smoothness of my skin. I feared you every time I looked in the mirror and discovered a new line around my eyes or a silver thread in my hair.

The End of an Exhausting Fight

I lived chasing you when I was young, wanting to fast-forward calendars to arrive quickly at the future; and I lived running from you in my adulthood, trying to freeze years in an impossible present. What an absurd and exhausting battle it is to try to stop the course of a river that only knows how to flow toward the sea of eternity.

"Today I understand that you are not a thief, but a sacred sculptor. Every wrinkle on my face is not a loss of beauty, but a line on the map of my history: they are the grooves left by my cleanest laughter and my deepest tears." – Delia Iaboni

Everything You Have Gifted Me in Exchange for Youth

In making peace with you, I realize that for every drop of physical vigor you have asked in return, you have handed me an immense ocean of wisdom, calm, and inner freedom. Today I thank you for the wonderful gifts only you know how to bestow upon those who embrace you with humility:

  • The gift of selectivity: You taught me not to waste a single second on empty arguments, on people who do not value my affection, or in places where my soul does not bloom. Today my peace is worth infinitely more than being right.
  • Losing the fear of others' opinions: It took you passing many times through my calendar for me to lose the exhausting need to please everyone and finally dare to be loyal to my own essence.
  • Appreciating the simple things: I used to seek happiness in grand, extraordinary, and noisy achievements. Today, thanks to you, I find the supreme miracle of existence in the aroma of morning coffee, in the warm hand of a loved one, and in the silence of a sunset.

A Pact for the Road Ahead

Dear Time, I no longer ask you to stop or turn back. Today I make a sacred pact with you: I will walk by your side at an unhurried pace, enjoying every season of my life with the dignity and grace of a tree that is not ashamed of its deep roots or its mature branches.

I open the doors of my home and my heart to you. Keep painting my hair silver and writing stories on my skin, because as long as you keep moving forward, it means I have the supreme privilege of being alive, loving, and learning on this wonderful journey called life.

With infinite gratitude and eternal respect,
Someone who learned to love you.
